WoW Profession Guide: Fishing

In World of Warcraft, the Fishing profession enables players to catch fish from lakes, rivers, oceans, and other bodies of water using a fishing pole. Most fish are used for Cooking, but other items can also be acquired through Fishing, such as low-level equipment, herbs, and lockboxes. Certain types of fish may also be sold for WoW Gold at the Auction House. Doing the Fishing daily quests at will also earn you WoW Gold.

Proficiency

As with all professions, Fishing has six proficiency levels, which are listed in the table below. As you increase your character’s level and your Fishing skill level, you can increase your Fishing Proficiency by visiting a Fishing Trainer. While any Fishing Trainer in Azeroth can teach you Apprentice to Artisan Fishing, you can only learn Master Fishing in Outland or Northrend, and Grand Master Fishing in Northrend.

Training costs WoW Gold, and the prices differ depending on whether you chose Fishing as your Primary or Secondary profession.

Leveling Fishing

The first thing you need to do is to visit a Fishing Trainer in one of Azeroth’s main cities to learn Apprentice Fishing. This section contains a table that shows you which items to create to level up your Proficiency in the fastest, most efficient manner.

Remember to always bring your Fishing Pole with you. You won’t be able to fish at all if you don’t! Having some bait will also help improve your chances of catching fish.

Fishing Leveling Guide

  • 1-300: Go to a body of water closest to where you are and Fish until you reach level 75. Go to the Barrens and Fish for Deviate Fish at the Wailing Caverns until you reach skill level 300. Make sure to go to a Fishing trainer when you get to levels 150 and 225 to learn Journeyman and Expert Fishing.
  • 300-450: Find or buy a +5 Strong Fishing Pole and a stack of +75 Bright Baubles, then head to the Borean Tundra. Learn Master Fishing from Fishy Ser’ji in Warsong Hold (Horde) or Old Man Robert at Valiance Keep (Alliance). Head on out into the Borean Tundra and Fish whenever you find yourself near a body of water while traveling. At skill level 375, go back to your Fishing trainer and learn Grand Master Fishing. After that, just keep Fishing whenever you get the opportunity until you reach skill level 450.

While there’s really no clear-cut “best” way to go about leveling your Fishing skill, the tips above will at least give you an idea how to go about it efficiently. Fishing may get boring after a while, but the variety of fish and items you can acquire from it, combined with the WoW Gold you can earn, makes it worth getting into.
