It’s hard to believe that strictly speaking, FFXIV is actually 5 years old. The game launched hobbling and broken in 2010, and while a dedicated core of hardcore fans toughed it out, Square Enix saw fit to effectively scrap the game and start over. It relaunched as “Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn” shortly afterward, under the helm of new director Naoki Yoshida, and it’s been a critical darling ever since. Fans have taken to the game too, with Square announcing over four million registered users, pretty impressive considering the game’s a paid MMO.
One thing fans have appreciated is the fact that the game is constantly growing and improving. Since launch, the game’s been refined, performance improved, bugs squashed and new content added. Just last month, long-time Final Fantasy fans were treated to a content patch that introduced the Manderville Gold Saucer, a new place to spend FFXIV Gil and take part in a variety of fun, relaxing minigames.
The Manderville Gold Saucer is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to FFXIV’s barrage of new content this year though. The dev team have lined up “Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward” as this year’s major expansion, and it so big it’s got as much content as the base game itself.
The new expansion will bring new areas, including Foundation, The Pillars, Coerthas Western Highlands, Dravania Forelands and Hinterlands, The Churning Mists and The Sea of Clouds. A new draconic playable race called the Au Ra will be introduced, as well as one new class for each of the three roles. Of particular interest to fans will be the introduction of flying mounts, including chocobos, and personal airships. A full rundown includes:
Level cap raise from 50 to 60 across all jobs and professions.
- Massive new areas.
- A new player race with both male and female characters.
- Multiple new jobs.
- New Primals, one of which will be completely unique to FFXIV.
- Many new dungeons — more than 3 or 4.
- High-end raids
- Airships, Airship, Airships — Free Companies can band together and build their own airships.
- New gear and recipes.

Director Yoshida has stated that while there are fewer zones to explore in Heavensward, the actual traversable area will be just as large as A Realm Reborn, which is an incredible feat. Yoshida explained that he aims to have Heavensward serve as a foundation for the future of FFXIV, which explains why there’s been so much work put into it.
“We want to introduce something that’s never been done before. We definitely want to bring a different kind of excitement from what was offered with A Realm Reborn. The launch of Heavensward is building that foundation. It’s a launch pad for where we can start our evolution.”
The wait for Heavensward may be tough, but there’s plenty of content to explore in the current game, especially with the new Manderville Gold Saucer update. Players looking to buy cheap FFXIV gil can look no further than EpicToon.com.
