The release of Warlords of Draenor draws ever closer, but what’s in the pipeline after that? It’s around this time we typically start to hear rumblings, unofficial or not, about what Blizzard’s got up their sleeves.
We all know that Blizzard recently canceled its long in development MMO successor to World of Warcraft, Titan. They cited an inability to “find the fun”, and questioned whether they wanted to create a brand new MMO anyway. It’s an understandable decision. The market has changed greatly since the early days of WoW, and new entrants into the MMO genre have found that you not only have to match an extremely high bar for polish at launch, you also have to have an incredible amount of content ready to go up against Blizzard’s 10 year juggernaut.
Following the cancellation, they’ve gone ahead and doubled down on World of Warcraft production, stating that they completely expect WoW to operate for at least another decade! Bold words, but everything we’ve seen and heard in the lead up to the release of Warlords of Draenor puts stock in that. If you’re a betting guy or gal, you probably wouldn’t want to put any wow gold down against more expansions after Warlord’s of Draenor, especially with this latest tidbit of news.
A new rumor sites a source outside of the Eden Prairie office at Blizzard, who says that Eye of Azshara is the next WoW expansion, and is planned to launch in Q1 2016. Rumor has it we’ll even hear an announcement as early as this year’s Blizzcon! That would be strange, considering Warlord’s of Draenor isn’t out yet, but it would definitely add a nitrous powered injection of buzz around the decade old game. There are even rumors that alongside the new expansion and Hearthstone, there will be a console focused PVP game that will be teased at Blizzcon, could we expect that on PC as well?
The rumor goes on to state that the post Mists of Pandaria drop in subscription numbers was painful for Blizzard, and their hoping the announcement of regular expansions and patches will help prove to the community that WoW is in it for the long haul. The recent and ongoing upgrade of player models definitely adds credence to that, and its worth noting that WoW’s subscriber numbers have been trending upward again as Warlords of Draenor’s release approaches.
Do we believe this rumor? It makes a lot of sense, but it also sounds like wishful thinking. The community has long wanted a South Seas flavored expansion, so it’s perhaps a little convenient that Eye of Azshara is poised to be exactly that, and that fan favorite zone Nazjatar will rise from the ocean and Queen Azshara herself will assault Azeroth. There’s talk of new zones apart from Nazjatar, such as Zandalar, the Rift of Aln, and Kul’Tiras.
It sounds as big an expansion as any released so far, if it’s true, it would definitely signal the next stage in WoW’s ongoing evolution. We can’t wait, Blizzcon is just around the corner, so we’ll know for sure then. Care to put any wow gold down either way?
