BlizzCon 2011 dated for October 21-22, revives speculation regarding Project Titan

Blizzard just announced that their fan convention BlizzCon 2011 will be held on October 21-22 (Fri-Sat) and will remain at their favorite West Coast venue, the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Apart from the date and place, the announcement was light on details, only listing the general activities we’ve come to expect from the mash-up convention for the Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo titles:

  • Hands-on play time with the latest versions of Blizzard Entertainment games
  • Discussion panels with Blizzard Entertainment developers
  • Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents
  • Community contests with great prizes
  • Commemorative merchandise based on Blizzard Entertainment’s game universes
  • More activities and attractions to be announced

At last year’s sold out BlizzCon 2010, the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft took center stage along with the then newly released StarCraft 2. For 2011, expectation is high that Diablo 3, the long-in-development action RPG, will be a focal point.

But more importantly, the rumor mill is cranking up again as people speculate on whether or not Blizzard will unveil its next-gen MMO, codenamed “Titan,” a game some believe to be a restart of the aging World of Warcraft, updated with wildly improved graphics.

Other hunches include Titan being a Halo-inspired MMO. This is based on an interesting bit of coincidence that a cancelled Halo MMO project from now-disbanded Ensemble Studios was also codenamed Titan. Blizzard has since hired several people, including artists and programmers, from Ensemble Studios.

Whatever project Titan turns out to be—it could be a StarCraft MMO for all we know—what’s clear from the timeline leak is that the game has been scheduled for a 4th quarter 2014 release alongside the 5th unnamed expansion for World of Warcraft. Definitely a lot of time left for more rumor-mongering.
