Everything You Need to Know About Neverwinter

Neverwinter 1

Looking for a polished, well-made MMO to try out? The guys and gals at Cryptic Entertainment have got you covered with Neverwinter. The studio itself has some enviable pedigree in the MMO genre, having created the astoundingly popular City of Heroes/Villains games, as well as a City of Champions and the excellent Star Trek Online.

As with most games from Cryptic Studios, Neverwinter is a free-to-play, action oriented game. It’s based on a tweaked version of the Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition rules set, so you can be sure it’s got sturdy underpinnings as far as gameplay is concerned. It looks great too, as Cryptic have honed their engine to a finely polished sheen over the past decade. There’s a surprising depth of engaging content to be had, all the way from starting areas through to the end game as well, you’ll not want for quests or ways to spend your hard-earned Neverwinter Gold here!

The Races of Neverwinter

Neverwinter 2

As you might expect from a game set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, gamers have a wide variety of races to choose from just a few of them include: Human, Elf, Drow, Dwarf, Halfling, Half-Elf, Tiefling and Half-Orc.

Humans are diverse and populous, capable of adapting to many climates and are flexible learners. Drow are a decadent race of dark elves with deep blue/black skin, who have been disowned by the rest of their race. Dwarves are hardy and proud, lovers of Neverwinter Gold, this race once lived as servants to the giants, they make mighty warriors and have built impressive cities. Halflings are small, resourceful race of people, quick and agile, and physically similar to humans.

Half-Elves are descendants of humans and elves. They are vital, lively and possessed with an insatiable wanderlust that drives them to explore the land. The Tieflings’ appearance is a vivid reminder of the days when devils walked the earth. Often distrusted, they tend to rely on cunning and guile to stay one step ahead. Half-Orcs are half human and half orc, cursed by the latter’s bloodline, they are surprisingly quick and ferocious in battle. Aside from these races, the game also includes the Dragonborn race, Metallic the Ancestry Dragonborn, the Menzoberranzan Renegade as well as Sun, Moon and Wood Elf races.

Neverwinter 3

In addition to a wealth of races, Neverwinter offers gamers a wide variety of playstyles thanks to its robust and diverse Class system:

  • Control Wizard: Battlefield crowd control, area of effect damage dealing
  • Devoted Cleric: Healing and buffs for allies, stat boosts etc.
  • Great Weapon Fighter: Tank, brute strength, two-handed weapons
  • Guardian Fighter: Defender, well armored, carries a shield
  • Oathbound Paladin: Defender, provides buffs and stat boosts
  • Hunter Ranger: Melee and ranged experts, archery, traps and dodges
  • Scourge Warlock: Blade wielding buffs, primarily defensive magic wielders
  • Trickster Rogue: Attacker, uses deception, stealth and speed to inflict damage

Perhaps Neverwinter’s most unique feature though, is it’s powerful and flexible Foundry tool. The Foundry allows gamers to create user-generated adventures set in Neverwinter itself, using a simple to use editor. Gamers can make short stories, custom maps and if they’re ambitious enough, entire campaigns. Once a map has been created, it can be uploaded and shared with the rest of the player-base.
